I don’t own an assault rifle, but you have brought up a valid point. Many people don’t think that the general public should have access to assault rifles, “Nobody needs a weapon intended solely for killing people” they say.
If you carefully read the 2nd amendment and if you need more validation read the Federal Papers written by Thomas Jefferson, you will see that the real reason for the 2nd amendment is to protect us common citizens from a tyrannical government. I heard Rosie O’Donnell say that the 2nd amendment was written when people had muskets and assault rifles were never envisioned. Well, our military and police aren’t using muskets, neither are the gang bangers and other criminals.
Some people think that the general public should have restricted access to guns. A few years ago Australia’s Parliament passed a law making most guns illegal and gun ownership difficult to say the least. Honest citizens turned over their guns to the government (they were paid some money for their guns) somewhere near 60,000 guns were collected from private citizens and destroyed. The problem is there is still an estimated 3 million guns in Australia. Many people managed to temporarily misplace their guns, of course criminals didn’t turn in their guns, after all, they are criminals.
Violent crime has soared, especially crime against the elderly. Handguns were banned so criminals cut rifles down to make pistols out of them.
Here in the USA, Washington DC and Chicago Illinois have some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Guess which two cities have the highest violent crime rates in the United States, year after year after year? In the past few years more and more states are passing some form of “Shall Issue” concealed carry permits. Some sates don’t require a permit at all for a private citizen to carry a concealed weapon. In all 38 states allow private citizens the right to carry a concealed firearm for a reason as simple as self defense. At first the anti gun crowd claimed that it would be like the wild, wild west with people shooting each other over minor traffic accidents. In those states violent crime has actually declined, and not just by a small amount.
My belief is that private citizens should be able to get a concealed carry permit after taking a 2 day class, learning the legal ins and outs of concealed carry and demonstrating safe handling and proficiency with a firearm. Perhaps a refresher 1 day class every 5 years.
See you at the shooting range!
